Improvements to Human Impacts

There are many things that can be done to improve and maintain positive impacts on the desert ecosystem of the outback. Some things that are already being done and can be improved upon are the management of invasive species. Invasive species cause many problems to the natural level of the ecosystem so the Australian government created the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service, which is responsible for ensuring no invasive species are brought into the country. (6)  They can do a better job though by not allowing any invasive species in to the country and regulate the desert where if an invasive species were to enter, they would take steps to eradicate it as soon as possible. They can also come up with alternative methods for the use of invasive species, such as creating an alternative method for killing cane beetles rather than introducing the invasive cane toad, which disrupted the ecosystem greatly. (8)

Another issue that could improve human’s impacts on the ecosystem is the management of off-roading. The Government should designate and heavily enforce an area that would be the least disruptive to the ecosystem for people to off-road in. In addition, they should regulate the equipment being used to ensure the most environmentally friendly gear is being used and which will not heavily contribute to noise pollution.

The last thing is to manage the tourist industry.  The government should establish national parks where tourists will not harm the ecosystem and will to pay to contribute to the up keep of the ecosystem.  They can also prevent any infrastructure, such as mines or military bases, to be built in an area of the desert that would greatly impact the ecosystem.  The ecosystem is in a relatively positive state place but there are always steps that could make it better.
